Rio ’88 features a selection of Tina’s legendary concert at the Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro on January 16, 1988 as part of her Break Every Rule Tour. With this concert in front of over 180,000 people, Tina broke an attendance record that landed her in the Guinness Book of World Records with the largest paying audience for a single artist.
Especially for this occasion, she changed the setlist and Tina opened it with the song Addicted To Love while she entered the stage on a Beija-Flor de Nilópolis float, designed by carnival designer Joãosinho Trinta. During the performance of Typical Male, she was accompanied by drummers, dancers and the singer of the samba school, Neguinho da Beija-Flor. Also Tina’s clothes were especially designed for this concert, which was closed with a big firework above the stadium.
The concert was broadcasted live on TV in North and South America and parts of it were released on home video the same year. In 2007, it was re-issued on a 3 DVD Set and in 2022, it was remastered as part of the Break Every Rule (Deluxe Edition).
